Swartland is a family owned and managed company, established in 1951 as Swartland Boudienste offering a selection of services including electrical contracting, building contracting, cabinet making, balustrades, building supply stores and joinery manufacturing. Swartland is based in Moorreesburg and Atlantis in the Cape.
By 1991 Swartland changed its focus to concentrating only on joinery, specifically wooden windows and doors. Today Swartland is one of the biggest joinery, specifically wooden windows and doors. Today, Swartland is one of the biggest joinery manufacturer’s in the world and certainly the biggest in South Africa. Swartland is the biggest manufacturer of pine paneldoors in the world and a huge player in the UK and USA markets.
Build with wood and save the trees.

As we become increasingly conscious of what we are doing to our planet, more and more questions are being asked about the cost that building with wood has on the environment.

And while there are as many experts on the subject as there are opinions, the following facts about wood may help to answer some of your questions.

Did you know that it takes more than 300 times the amount of energy needed to produce a cubic metre of aluminium than it does to produce a similar amount of treated wood? (And if it’s structural steel that figure goes up to 380.)

There’s also an enormous difference in the amount of carbon emitted during the manufacture of these different materials.

Steel emits 8117kg per m3, aluminium 6325kg m3 and wood, believe it or not, has a negative rating of -228kg per m3. Wood shows a negative figure because an allowance is made for the carbon that remains locked in the wood for the duration of its use as a timber product.

Naturally, the use of wood still needs to be strictly controlled and replanting needs to takes place. (All Swartland wood is secured from responsible commercial loggers.) Ironically, the more wood is used the more trees get planted.

Consider the following excerpt from the European Commission's DG Enterprise, 2003. "Wood plays a major role in combating climate change... Greater use of wood products will stimulate the expansion of Europe's forests and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by substituting for fossil fuel intensive products."

It’s a fact that our environment continues to pay a price for our progress. The least we can do is look at ways of reducing our impact.

The wonderful world of wood is brought to you by Swartland Wooden Windows and Doors.

If you’re about to build a house or are making some much-needed renovations, then the following information about the insulation efficiency of wood may save more than just money.

As a construction material wood is 4 times more efficient as an insulator than an equivalent thickness of cinder block (concrete and coal), 6 times more efficient than brick, 15 times more efficient than concrete, 306 times more efficient than steel and yes, you guessed it, 1,770 times more efficient than aluminium.

Lots of figures but what do they mean to you, me and the world? Well, the better insulated our homes are the less we spend on energy to heat and cool them. And the less energy we use the better it is for the planet.

So give wood some thought the next time you’re thinking about windows. It’ll save you some money when it comes to insulating your home and, even if it’s unintended, you’ll also be helping the planet.
