Being green does not mean:
- Using more energy in manufacturing a product than it saves in its life-time.
- Having an ³environmentally friendly² product that is hazardous to dispose of, at the end of its life.
- Having 100% recycled product where transportation of the recycling material and finished products are high.
- Recycling processes that have toxic by-products.
So what does it mean?
Organizations must investigate and quantify, where possible, every aspect that goes into the manufacture, transportation, installation, recycling (where applicable) and/or final disposal of products. There must be a balance between the environmental cost of manufacture, transportation and installation of products and the environmental good that they contain.
When rating a building using the Green Star Rating tool/s, for example, assessors cannot only rate the energy aspects of the project, even though that has high importance. They have to consider all the environmental impacts surrounding that project. The approach to products should be the same. Manufacturers must be transparent and then can demonstrate
(holistically) where the use of their products could assist in the 'greenness' of a project.
Isover
Isover`s glasswool insulation is manufactured from a combination of sand and
up to 80% recycled post-consumer glass that would otherwise go to landfill.
On average, our glasswool contains 50% recycled glass. Depending on
customer and grade requirements, Isover EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) can
contain from 10% to 50% recycled product.
Isover process waste is reduced by incorporating production scrap back into
the primary production process, or reprocessing it into other products.
Thanks to its resilient properties, glasswool can be compressed by a factor
of up to ten at the time of packaging and palletizing. This patented process
lowers the environmental impact of transport, improving handling and
reducing the need for packaging materials.
Over its installed life (usually 50 years), a typical ISOVER glasswool
product saves more
than 100 times the energy consumed and the CO2 emitted in its manufacture,
transport and disposal. The CO2 and energy balance switches to positive a
few months after installation. Acoustic comfort goes hand in hand with
thermal comfort provided by Isover Glasswool products.
These products have good sound absorption properties and are often
installed to improve internal noise levels. Isover manufactures a range of
air-conditioning insulation products and industrial boiler insulation
products. The installation of insulation on air-conditioning/ventilation and
boiler systems allows these systems to operate at a more optimal level
reducing heat ingress/loss, reducing condensation, reducing the effect of
humidity and reducing the possibility of mould growth and other ³nasties².
Some thermally insulating products are manufactured with blowing agents that
can cause long term damage to the Earth¹s stratospheric ozone layer.
Glasswool products do not contain any blowing agents. The insulating
properties of Glasswool come from the ability of the glass fibres to trap
air, therefore, Glasswool products have zero Ozone Depleting Potential
(ODP). The EPS manufactured by Isover uses blowing agents that are not
harmful to the environment and also have zero Ozone Depleting Potential.
Gyproc Donn
Gyproc plasterboard products are manufactured from naturally mined gypsum
and uses only recycled paper in its manufacture. RhinoLite, Gyproc¹s
interior plaster uses another manufacturer¹s waste product as its main raw
material.
Gyproc RhinoBoard products for walling and ceilings - are well known in
the building industry and are extensively used for finishing Shell and Core
type applications.
They can be ³designed for disassembly² in certain applications. Even when
not designed for disassembly, the quantity of waste material is less than
when constructed with traditional materials. The Gyproc systems are highly
flexible and easy to renovate.
The Gyproc RhinoWall systems are 84% lighter than traditional construction
materials.1 ton of plasterboard is equivalent to 31m2 of coverage. Compare
this to 1 ton of traditional construction being equivalent to 5m2 of
coverage. This not only saves on transportation of materials to site, but
also on crane time and crane usage on site. The Gyproc systems are ³dry²
systems with easy preparation and there is less dust on site and less water
used on site.
Weber
Weber tile adhesives and grouts are made from sand and other ingredients,
that go together to make up a range of adhesives with no VOC¹s (volatile
organic compounds). If the project managers require a heavy duty floor
covering without tiles, Weber Grano colour products are the solution. These
products and the Weber Marbelite (swimming pool product) also have no VOC¹s.
The Weber ETICS system works hand in hand with Isover EPS to fix a strong,
resilient, energy efficient solution to external walling. The manufacturing
of Weber products is done at ambient temperatures with raw materials sourced
close to the plants.
SAINT-GOBAIN
All Saint-Gobain products are manufactured locally within South Africa and
in some instances regionally within Provinces. This ensures that the
products get to site with
minimal ³mileage².

R-value
The ability of a product to resist the transfer of heat.
The higher the R-value the more effective the insulation.
All bulk insulation materials have an R-value to determine their
effectiveness. The thermal resistance, R-value is the ability of the
insulation to resist the transfer of heat and is the most important factor
when selecting insulation.
R-value
The R-value is determined by dividing the thickness of the material by its
thermal conductivity.
The lower the thermal conductivity and the thicker the product the higher
the R-value. The R-value is the best indicator of performance.
SANS 204 Consists of the following parts
- SANS 204-1 General requirements for energy efficiency
- SANS 204-2 Naturally Ventilated Buildings
- SANS 204-3 Artificially Ventilated Buildings
SANS 204 can also be used for voluntary energy efficient retrofits of
existing buildings
in order to reduce energy accounts and electricity usage.
The following summary focuses on areas that are impacted by insulation and
does not deal with areas such as window treatments which are also covered in
SANS 204.
Part 1
Part 1 is largely based on two tables:
- Maximum energy usage demand per building classification for each climatic
zone.
- Maximum annual consumption per building classification per building for
each climatic zone.
South Africa has been divided into six climatic zones according to there
humidity and temperature variations.
Part 2/3
Part 2 applies to naturally ventilated buildings which are occupied and
require certain areas to be heated or cooled and Part 3 applies to
artificially ventilated buildings that have centralized HVAC systems.
Passive building design is encouraged and wherever possible, the efficient
use of renewable energy is stipulated.
Part 2/3
The standard is written according to how one would actually construct a
building.
- Site and siting (Orientation & shading)
- Building design (Foundation, floor, walls, fenestration, ceiling & roof)
- Building sealing (Envelope, air filtration & leakage)
- Services (Lighting, power, hot water leakage & appliances)
These sections stipulate the total R-value that must be achieved by the
foundations, floors, walls, roofing system and services. (See tables in SANS
204)
Part 3 Pipe and Ducting Services
All chilled water, hot water and refrigeration piping, conditioned air duct
work and flexible ducting shall be insulated to limit heat gain/loss to not
more than 5% from source to furthest point of delivery on a system.
